Accompanied by his nephew Harry and his guide Hans, Professor Von Hardwigg follows directions in a coded message left by sixteenth-century alchemist Arne Saknussemm to the crater of the volcano Sneffels. There they descend into a subterranean world that is home to marvels from the prehistoric past that could never exist in the world above ground. One of his styled "extraordinary voyages," Jules Verne's Journey to the Center of the Earth is a masterpiece of adventure that has never been out of print since it was first published in French in 1864. This edition of Verne's novel features more than 50 full-page illustrations by the distinguished artist Édouard Rio. Journey to the Center of the Earth is one of Barnes & Noble's Collectible Editions classics. Each volume features authoritative texts by the world's greatest authors in an exquisitely designed foil-stamped binding, with distinctive gilt edging and an attractive ribbon bookmark. Decorative, durable, and collectible, these books offer hours of pleasure to readers young and old and are an indispensable cornerstone for any home library.

Adventure awaits!

This classic was so much fun to read. I love the adventures paired with the scientific knowledge at the time. I don’t know why I waited so long to read it!

transaltor not listed

This book does not list its translator. Clearly the book was translated from French into English or this book would not be in here in English, but who did this translation is a mystery. I asked the workers at B&N before I checked out as to which version it was and they could not figure it out either - it simply is not listed online, on the cover of the book, or inside the book. This is not something that should be a mystery. The translator's name should be on the front cover where it can be clearly seen by everyone. After bringing the book home, I did a lot of research and discovered that this is appears to be the original translation - one that was poorly done by a man who just did not have the technical vocabulary to translate the book properly and who put a lot of biases into his translations. The book is beautiful, but I have to return it and find a copy in an ACCURATE translation. Barnes and Noble should be making these book in the best translation possible, not falling back to whichever translation was cheapest to reprint.

Beautiful Cover

I really enjoyed reading this book. It's a classic story and very fun. The book itself is beautiful: the cover, the gold paint on the outside of the pages, the many illustrations. Especially for the price, I thought this was a great deal on a very attractive addition to my classics collection. I also got the copy of Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea and they look great side by side.

Well-made book with an awful translation

I recently bought this book and was eager to read an old classic. I was surprised to find that all the names have been changed, events omitted, it is a complete rewrite of the novel and it doesn't even count as a translation. After doing some research I found out that this is the original translation back in the 1800s and that it's considered the worst translation of Jules Verne's works. If you're a Jules Verne fan, stay away from this book. It doesn't come close to the original story, and there are much better translations out there. It doesn't matter how nice the book looks, sure it might look nice on the shelf but the actual content is really lacking for anyone who loves the original story. I don't know why Barnes and Noble decided to put so much effort in such a bad translation. Sure, it's a free translation, but anyone would've been willing to pay a bit more for them to use one of the more modern translations of the story rather than getting just a rewrite.
