A Thousand No's: A growth mindset story of grit, resilience, and creativity by DJ Corchin

This is a great little book, not just for kids, but for adults as well. A young girl has a little glowing egg of an idea, but when she shares it, she gets a No. This No is heavy, it's difficult to carry, and it hurts. Then she gets another No, and another, and soon the No's are making her idea grow and change shape. The idea is still hers, but the help of others is making her idea better, until finally it turns into a great big Yes. Now, the moral of the story is pretty easy to see here, but at the same time, it doesn't smash you in the face. It's a good thing for children to learn, that hearing No doesn't have to be the end of an idea, and that No's can be helpful, but you know what? Adults could use this message too! Dan Dougherty's illustrations, which have an Angus Oblong vibe to them, are fabulous, and really bring DJ Corchin's story to life in a quirky, entertaining way, and I don't see how the text and art could get any better suited to each other. This would make the perfect gift for any would-be entrepreneurs, inventors, authors, artists, anyone looking to create something new.

3.5 stars
A THOUSAND NO'S is a cute picture book about the way that feedback can change an idea. A girl has an idea, but she gets her first NO. It feels awful, but she places it inside, and it changes it. She gets another NO and then some more, and soon, her idea is hard to handle, so she needs to get help. After she gets her thousandth NO, her idea has turned into something else- a YES! This book has a simple idea- how criticism changes our ideas, sometimes for the better. The illustrations are really simple, sketches in black and white, except for the final YES. If you think about it too hard, it loses its appeal, but at the simplest surface level, it is a cute book about persistence and evolving ideas. I would recommend for children who enjoy simple illustrations and cute ideas. The word art here is really well done. Please note that I received a review copy through Sourcebooks Early Reads program. All opinions are my own.

3 year old toddler loves it
My daughter loves to read along with the authors animated style! She is a toddler so she loves the word no she was immediately drawn Into the story. She memorized the story and she always wants to read it herself! She reads this repeatedly!

Inspiring Quick Read
Love the message that this book supports; hearing "no" isn't always a bad thing and shouldn't discourage you. This is a great book for kids but also for adults of any age. We always tell kids that they should follow their dreams and not give up, which this book really illustrates. I think it's worth reading for children and for yourself!

New perennial classic
The message of this book, combined with illustrations similar to that of Tim Burton, is applicable for “kids” of all ages and is my go-to gifting book for any occasion. A Thousand No’s is a story of perseverance, and not only believing in yourself, but in those you surround yourself with. If you’ve read What Do You Do With an Idea? and The Most Magnificent Thing, read A Thousand No’s and let yourself be inspired.
