RF 50mm f/1.8 STM Lens
Product details
Web ID: 18162139A good lens. Just know its limitations.
I bought this lens a few months ago refurbished during a big flash sale. After all, every photographer needs at least one standard focal length lens for whatever format size they're shooting on. The lens looked brand new when it arrived. The lens has a metal base, but is plastic for everything else. The lens does a great job of controlling unwanted flares and ghosting. Images are sharp enough when stopped down once or twice, but can be a little bit soft wide open, which is typical. I was able to get some amazing photos after dark on a recent trip to Vegas, but without IS or IBIS, I was definitely pushing this lens to its limits when handholding the camera. The control ring and manual focus requires diving into the menu after moving the switch on the side of the lens, and no lens hood is included. Despite these things, it's still a good lens to add to your camera bag if you can get one for the right price.

Nifty Fifty
The autofocus is swift and accurate. Pictures are clear and bright. Bokeh is easy to control. I got this lens as a replacement for my old Minolta 50mm 1.7 from 1986 which I used (manual focus) with an adapter on my Eos R7.

Outstanding Lens
Quality Glass in a small package, technology came a long way. The new RF lenses are amazing; you don't have to buy L to get quality images anymore and I mean Quality. This lens is like having 2 in one, it captures a bit closer in the frame compared to the L and better at close ups also. From around F3 things get super sharper.

Greta value and quality
I am pleasantly surprised at the quality of this lens at the price point it is. The lens feels good and the image quality is great, with good focusing using the R6.

Sharp Inexpensive Prime
Bought my first entry level "real" camera (R100) on a whim during a Black Friday sale with two kit zoom lenses. After getting a chance to use it a bit, and really enjoying it taking it on vacation, I decided to try a few different lenses. This was the first additional lens I bought and first prime lens. So far I am really enjoying it. It really make the image quality step up from the basic kit lenses. I bought this as a refurbished unit right from Canon, so it made it even cheaper. The only thing that surprised me was how noticeably loud the auto focus is. Don't really notice it outdoors, but indoor in low light it does hunt around for focus a lot. It is loud enough to pic up on the microphone when recording video. I can feel the motor moving back and forth if I have it on and just walk through my house. I've had to override and focus manually a lot too. I do also find the 50mm focal length on a crop sensor camera a little too narrow to be the go to, all around length, especially indoors. I also bough a used 30mm prime from a 3rd party company, which is roughly about the 50mm full frame equivalent on a APS-C. That's what I leave on the camera as a default to get a quick pic around my house. I do like the 50mm better for walking around hiking though. It is also very compact to through in a travel bag.
