Named a Notable Book of the Year by The New York Times Book Review and The Washington Post What is it like to be a brain surgeon? How does it feel to hold someone's life in your hands, to cut into the stuff that creates thought, feeling and reason? How do you live with the consequences of performing a potentially lifesaving operation when it all goes wrong? With astonishing compassion and candor, leading neurosurgeon Henry Marsh reveals the fierce joy of operating, the profoundly moving triumphs, the harrowing disasters, the haunting regrets and the moments of black humor that characterize a brain surgeon's life. Do No Harm provides unforgettable insight into the countless human dramas that take place in a busy modern hospital. Above all, it is a lesson in the need for hope when faced with life's most difficult decisions.

Wise, fascinating and thought provoking.

The author is a prominent British neurosurgeon with a wonderful talent of storytelling. To describe the subject of the book as the author’s professional experience would be way too narrow. Each chapter of the book is “anchored “ around a brain condition, but it talks about much, much more : human successes and failures, helping and hurting others, British bureaucracy, learning and teaching, Ukraine, power of science, beauty and cruelty of life. Any medical matters are well explained for the common reader, but if you look at an illustration of a human brain before reading this book you will enjoy it even more. I grade the books as Buy and Keep (BK), Read a Library Copy ( RLC) and Once I Put It Down I Couldn’t Pick It Up ( OIPD-ICPU). This one is a strong RLC for everyone and a BK for anyone in the medical profession.
