National Book Award Winner, PEN America Award Winner, and New York Times Bestseller! Perfect for fans of This Is Us, Robin Benway's beautiful interweaving story of three very different teenagers connected by blood explores the meaning of family in all its forms—how to find it, how to keep it, and how to love it. Being the middle child has its ups and downs. But for Grace, an only child who was adopted at birth, discovering that she is a middle child is a different ride altogether. After putting her own baby up for adoption, she goes looking for her biological family, including—Maya, her loudmouthed younger bio sister, who has a lot to say about their newfound family ties. Having grown up the snarky brunette in a house full of chipper redheads, she's quick to search for traces of herself among these not-quite-strangers. And when her adopted family's long-buried problems begin to explode to the surface, Maya can't help but wonder where exactly it is that she belongs. And Joaquin, their stoic older bio brother, who has no interest in bonding over their shared biological mother. After seventeen years in the foster care system, he's learned that there are no heroes, and secrets and fears are best kept close to the vest, where they can't hurt anyone but him. Don't miss this moving novel that addresses such important topics as adoption, teen pregnancy, and foster.

So Refreshing

This was THE BEST book of 2017. Perfect topics, perfect (flawed but perfectly fitting) characters, perfect pacing, perfect POV changing. I just loved this book and all of the emotional situations it talked about. There’s some pretty heavy material here and it was handled so nicely. I’d recommended this book to seriously everyone.

Excellent Book!

This is by far one of the best books I have ever read! The author, Robin Benway, does an amazing job alternating between the three protagonists, Joaquin, Maya, and Grace, to allow the reader to see their different point of views. In this book, Robin includes several obstacles that teenagers may face such as breakups, the struggles that come with relationships, parents who divorce, parents who suffer with alcoholism, mental health, and so much more. With Joaquin struggling with his self esteem, to Maya’s parents’ divorce and her alcoholic mother, all the way to Grace having to put up her own daughter for adoption, this book clearly displays the intense journey of life one may have. The author also conveys the feelings these three siblings have about them being adopted as well. Joaquin, Grace, and Maya all have different backgrounds to share with one another from their childhoods and before they met. This story revolves around the idea of the importance of family, whether that be biological or nonbiological who loves the child unconditionally as one of their own. The obstacles these three characters overcame could be relatable to many readers in which they generally give a positive outlook on them once they overcome the obstacles themselves. Although the main focus of this book is family, the author also includes several romantic moments throughout the story. These moments of romance happen between Maya and her girlfriend Claire, as well as the flourishing relationship between Grace and Rafe. This book is a very coming of age story and demonstrates what it’s like to find yourself along this bumpy journey called life. Seeing Joaquin, Maya, and Grace’s growth as people really put into perspective what life is truly like without sugarcoating anything either. Robin Benway shows the raw emotions of these three characters which is why I enjoyed reading this book so much. I would definitely recommend this book to young adults and older as it does an excellent job of showing this beautiful journey of life!
