Entertaining Memoir from an EGOT Winner
TRIGGER WARNINGS AND ALERTS: violent domestic abuse, sexual abuse, drug addiction, extremely foul language. "Finding Me" is the memoir of Viola Davis, only the fourth Black EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony) winner in entertainment history. This is the story of her "rise" to fame, which was actually more slog and hard work to overcome her childhood of abuse and hard-core poverty to become the self-professed whole woman that she is today, comfortable finally w/ her past. On the whole, I found the book entertaining, and was moved to tears (yep, at the gym) over her heartfelt depiction of losing her father. I could FEEL her shame over going to school dirty, b/c there was no running water or working toilet in most of the apartments in which she grew up. I am NOT a theater geek, however, so hearing about the actual acting process and her "fan-girling" over her fellow actors was not my cup of tea. I was REALLY put off by the non-stop foul swearing, mostly at the beginning of the book. This is a serious charge on my part, as I can swear fluently and well, and don't usually mind swear words in my reading life. I think the best way to ingest this book is in the audio format, as I did, b/c Ms. Davis narrates the book herself, so we get to enjoy her deep, melodious voice. It also adds an authenticity to the story. Low 4 stars rounded down to 4.
