Hair Love is refreshing and inspirational!

The cover is inviting because the cover page is vibrant and sparks a curiosity as to the beautifully illustrated hair on the two characters. The title, Hair Love, short and simple, lends to the assumption the story will host a dialogue about… loving the unique hair we all have. Zuri’s father in the story provides a nurturing finesse when telling his daughter, she is beautiful and is a princess. What a lovely father-daughter representation, especially with African American characters. This is an encouraging and uplifting portrayal of a little girl accepting her unique hair and believing she is strong and worthy. Zuri has a sense of humor and the dazzling illustrations capture the essence of the author’s intentions- to showcase and celebrate textured, kinky, curly hair. Great read for young girls!

Hair Love, Father Love

Zuri’s hair “has a mind of its own,” which she often considers a liability. But she also realizes that her ability to wear her hair in various ways allows her to play many characters, from a princess to a caped superhero. But the day she wants her hair to look especially good, her father tries to help. His first attempts fail miserably, finally shocking Zuri with a puffy ’fro. But Dad’s determined to help her get that special style she’s looking for. With a little help from the internet, he patiently follows instructions so she can look her best for what she’s been eagerly anticipating—the return of her mother, apparently, from traveling. The book ends with, “Sometimes love looks like braids, puffs, and twists.” The story is precious, the takeaway is heartwarming, and the rich illustrations and color palette bring every component together beautifully. As with any good picture book, many elements of the story come through the illustrations without needing to be mentioned in the text. One outstanding feature of the art is the expressive eyes of each character in the story—including the cat. This is a picture book filled with wit and love. Highly recommend.

Beautiful!!

My daughter is in the fourth grade, and this Oscar-winning video was one of her class assignments. Due to Covid, she is learning online. Therefore, I was able to watch this video along with her. This is just a beautiful story about love. Although the artwork displays a Black family, this book crosses color lines, and breaks barriers because love is universal. You do not have to be Black to understand this story. Not only is this story about love, but it is also about loyalty, character, creativity, and perseverance. It was a very enjoyable story.

It's not about the hair....

...it's about the love. I'm going to contradict several reviews right now, this book is not about loving your natural hair, it's about how the characters use the avenue of hair to show their love to one another. It's about a girl who equates hair and hairstyles, on an emotional level, with her absent mother. It's about a father who steps up and steps out of his comfort zone and typical parental roll to not only meet his daughter's physical need but her emotional one as well, because he loves her. It's how shared, mundane tasks bond us on an emotional level and can be a manifestation of our love (maybe in your familyit wasn't hair, maybe it was cooking, gardening, painting nails, changing the oil in the car, etc.). This book is not about hair, it's about love -- the love of a child for a parent, a parent for a child, the love of a spouse. So, if you're Asian, Caucasian, Hispanic, Pacific Islander, whatever, do not overlook this title simply because natural African hair is not part of your life; because, it's not about the hair.

I adore this!

I wish I had this book when I was younger because then I wouldn't have gotten a relaxer and shaved my head and done stuff to damage my hair. This book really teaches the reader to love their hair and that their hair is beautiful. I LOVE this book.
