A new translation from the French by Marion Wiesel. Night is Elie Wiesel's masterpiece, a candid, horrific, and deeply poignant autobiographical account of his survival as a teenager in the Nazi death camps. This new translation by Marion Wiesel, Elie's wife and frequent translator, presents this seminal memoir in the language and spirit truest to the author's original intent. And in a substantive new preface, Elie reflects on the enduring importance of Night and his lifelong, passionate dedication to ensuring that the world never forgets man's capacity for inhumanity to man. Night offers much more than a litany of the daily terrors, everyday perversions, and rampant sadism at Auschwitz and Buchenwald, it also eloquently addresses many of the philosophical as well as personal questions implicit in any serious consideration of what the Holocaust was, what it meant, and what its legacy is and will be.

Review of Night

The haunting journey of a teenage boy enduring the unimaginable horrors of the Holocaust is sure to capture the attention of a reader with its honesty, shedding light on the darkest chapter of humanity while urging us to never forget. Elie Wiesel does exactly that in his memoir Night. This is a very important book about the Holocaust. It was a bestseller for decades and it has been translated into more than 30 languages, and it has been used in schools worldwide. Elie Wiesel has written over 50 books, including Dawn and Day which create a trilogy with Night. However Night is his most famous book and he has won multiple awards including: the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Congressional Gold Metal, and the French Legion of Honor. Night, a story narrated by Eliezer, was written to show the reality of the Holocaust and make sure the horrors are not forgotten. This memoir recounts Eliezer's journey from his childhood in Sighet, Romania, to his experiences in Auschwitz and Buchenwald concentration camps. Throughout the story, his father, Shlomo, sticks by his side and is very important. It explores themes of faith, identity, survival, and the impact of trauma. Eliezer struggles with the loss of his loved ones and his belief in God amidst unimaginable suffering. One of the most striking aspects of this story is the raw emotion captured in Elie Wiesel’s storytelling. He captures the pain of losing loved ones, his faith, and parts of himself. When he loses his father he confesses that he has no tears left to cry, which shows how the Holocaust has taken away his ability to mourn his father. This book brings the Holocaust to life in ways that statistics and textbooks cannot. Wiesel’s firsthand account lets readers get a sense of what Nazi concentration camp was like. Wiesel describes what it was like to be packed into cattle cars for days on end. He also describes arriving at Auschwitz and seeing the crematorium for the first time and realizing what it meant. While Night is a short novel, each sentence is packed with meaning, making the story unforgettable. It is concise, but it paints a vivid picture of the horrors he witnessed. When Wiesel arrives at Auschwitz, he repeats the phrase “Never shall I forget.” Rather than including unnecessary details that could overwhelm the reader, he only includes the details that will stick with the reader after reading. This is an incredibly captivating story that tells the raw details of living through the Holocaust. It conveys powerful themes and beautifully moves the reader. This incredible story about a horrifying time in history is sure to capture the attention of someone looking for a firsthand account of this tragic time.

Great Read

Night By: Elie Wiesel Night by Elie Wiesel is a powerful and haunting memoir about the Holocaust. The book is a first-hand account of Wiesel’s experiences as a jewish teenager in Nazi-occupied Hungary. Through his vivid and heartbreaking descriptions, the reader is taken on a journey through the horrors of the concentration camps, including Auschwitz and Buchenwald. The book is written in a simple, yet touching style that makes the reader feel as though they are right there alongside Wiesel, experiencing the same fear, hunger, and loss. Throughout the book, the reader is exposed to the brutal reality of the Holocaust and the devastating impact it had on Wiesel and those around him. One of the most powerful aspects of Night is the way in which Wiesel reflects on his own experiences and how they shaped his beliefs and spirituality. The reader is able to see the transformation of Wiesel from a deeply religious young man to someone who has lost faith in God. This internal struggle is at the heart of the book and is what makes it so emotionally deep. Another important aspect of the book is its portrayal of the relationships between the prisoners and the guards. The reader sees the different ways in which the prisoners respond to their situation and the relationship they form with each other. There are moments of hope and compassion, but there are aso instances of betrayal and dehumanization. This complexity makes the characters in the book feel real and adds to the overall impact of the story. The book is also a testament to the power of memory and the importance of bearing witness to the atrocities of the past. Wiesel writes, “For the survivor who chooses to testify, it is clear: his duty is to bear witness for the dead and for himself. To forget would be not only dangerous but offensive: to forget the dead would be akin to killing them a second time.” This quote speaks to the purpose of the book and why it is still relevant today. In conclusion, Night is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand the horror of the Holocaust and the impact it had on those who lived through it. The book is a powerful reminder of the importance of never forgetting the past and the need to continue to educate future generations about the atrocities of the Holocaust. The book is an emotional and thought-provoking read that will stay with the reader long after they have finished it.

Tragic memoir

My son brought this home from high school and asked if I wanted to read it. Of course I read and reflected on this tragic first-hand account of the horrors of the Holocaust and was able to have a deeper conversation with him. So glad this is school curriculum. This is a heart-breaking memoir but it’s important that we don’t forget. These stories aren’t just history; the act of remembering can both honor those lost and ensure that humans collectively fight strongly against future atrocities. Highly recommend.

Correct and true history

I purchased this book soon as it was banned from the southern states. Abbott is an idiot. The book is excellent, well written and true. In college in 1971 I researched and wrote a paper on the Holocaust, the book is spot on, don’t prevent our children from learning about history , or it will repeat.

Didn't really like

I read this book for one of my classes in high school. I did not like this book, because I'm not one for tear jerks. If you like realistically sad and emotional books, this one's for you.

A must read

This is the true story of Elie Weisel and his family who were forced from their home in 1944 by the Nazis and sent to the concentration camps. After arrival, he and his father were separated from this mother and sisters. Elie was 15 years old at that time. He and his father were moved to different camps but were able to stay together. This book was difficult to read and very sad, but it is a must read as something like this should never happen again.
