Foul Smell! Beautiful Rug

Love the pattern and overall look of this wool rug In our living space. However, upon opening it we noticed a faint odor, which got stronger as we unfolded the rug & laid it out. Mildew? On the back there are several tiny hard bumps encased within the backing??? Not all over, and they are rock hard when stepped on- and are random around the rug area? I tried to contact Macys the website says there is a special department for rug issues, which only works 9-12 M-F. (This was late on Friday of course and Monday is a Holiday... so I have to wait 3 days 🙁 We have a fan on it and have opened windows but the smell is still quite evident! Boooo I want a new Unsmelly Rug!
