The Best We Could Do- An Illustrated Memoir by Thi Bui
Product Details
Web ID: 15415604A moving and beautiful illustrated memoir
As she tells the story of her family’s emigration from Việt Nam following the fall of Saigon, Thi Bui also narrates her own story as both a child and a mother. Bui examines the ambivalence of family relationships, especially the inscrutable bonds between parents and their children. This memoir serves as both a personal history of Bui’s family and a history of 20th-century colonialism in Southeast Asia—in both respects it reflects the beauty and the pain of love and loyalty.

Very Interesting And Engaging
I read this for an Asian History Class that I was in and as soon as it was assigned I couldn't put it down. Not only is the author's artwork extraordinary but the story of her family and the way she tells it is extremely enjoyable and captivating. Even though I was required to read it I would still definitely recommend it, it's an amazing read!

Read this rich graphic memoir!
THE BEST WE COULD DO is an illustrated memoir that allows us an intimate look at the author's family journey from their war-torn home in Vietnam to their new lives in America. This memoir is heartbreaking to say the least - through breathtaking art, we follow Bui family's hardships during Vietnam war and their struggles while adapting in America. Bui shows us that there's a reason and story behind every family dysfunction as we dig into her family's painful past. Among the family's imperfection, the author examines the strength and meaning of family, as well as the importance of identity. I highly recommend this memoir for those wanting to learn more about Vietnam history/culture or readers who want to take a deep look into immigration's journey.
