J.R.R. Tolkien's grand masterwork illustrated with the art created by Tolkien himself as he envisioned Middle-earth A PBS Great American Read Top 100 PickOne Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them. In ancient times the Rings of Power were crafted by the Elven-smiths, and Sauron, the Dark Lord, forged the One Ring, filling it with his own power so that he could rule all others. But the One Ring was taken from him, and though he sought it throughout Middle-earth, it remained lost to him. After many ages it fell by chance into the hands of the hobbit Bilbo Baggins. From Sauron's fastness in the Dark Tower of Mordor, his power spread far and wide. Sauron gathered all the Great Rings to him, but always he searched for the One Ring that would complete his dominion. When Bilbo reached his eleventy-first birthday he disappeared, bequeathing to his young cousin Frodo the Ruling Ring and a perilous quest: to journey across Middle-earth, deep into the shadow of the Dark Lord, and destroy the Ring by casting it into the Cracks of Doom. The Lord of the Rings tells of the great quest undertaken by Frodo and the Fellowship of the Ring: Gandalf the Wizard; the hobbits Merry, Pippin, and Sam; Gimli the Dwarf; Legolas the Elf; Boromir of Gondor; and a tall, mysterious stranger called Strider. Good book, horrible cover

The cover is prone to getting disgusting dirty, it has to be the most fragile paper ever bc trying to clean it with a napkin ripped the paper off the cover.

Splendid Republish of a Classic Tale

The last thing I needed was ANOTHER copy of the complete Lord of the Rings. Yet this version, featuring the author's artwork, and bound in a resplendent cover was a must-have. The paper quality is rich and should last a Middle Age and the presentation inside and out makes this worthy of a spot on your desk oe bookshelf so that others can pick it up and be drawn in completely.

Good... but maps as separate inserts

Great book, I just don't understand why the maps were added as folded sheets of paper not attached to the book in any way. Normally I'd see the maps printed on the inside cover. They could have also had an attached folded page, which would have been a much better option, but this is a pretty pathetic way of including maps in a book given other options that were available. Other than that, it is a beautiful book and, besides the loose maps, I am very happy with it. Just be careful about loosing those maps!

Incredible production!

This is a beautiful production of one of my favorite reads. I love the decoration on the page edges, and the illustrations! 32, to be precise (and contrary to other reviews I've seen, they get started right away - i.e. pages i and v in the intro, and pages 20, 26, and 48-ish). The two included maps fold out to a really nice size; I love that I can take them out and peruse as desired, especially in the larger size--really helps me dive in (compared to other copies of the book, where the maps are bound in with the rest of the text). Absolutely love it.
