From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of That Summer comes another fun, feisty (The Washington Post) novel of family, secrets, and the ties that bind. When her twenty-two-year-old stepdaughter announces her engagement to her pandemic boyfriend, Sarah Danhauser is shocked. But the wheels are in motion. Headstrong Ruby has already set a date (just three months away!) and spoken to her beloved safta, Sarah's mother Veronica, about having the wedding at the family's beach house in Cape Cod. Sarah might be worried, but Veronica is thrilled to be bringing the family together one last time before putting the big house on the market. But the road to a wedding day usually comes with a few bumps. Ruby has always known exactly what she wants, but as the wedding date approaches, she finds herself grappling with the wounds left by the mother who walked out when she was a baby. Veronica ends up facing unexpected news, thanks to her meddling sister, and must revisit the choices she made long ago, when she was a bestselling novelist with a different life. Sarah's twin brother, Sam, is recovering from a terrible loss, and confronting big questions about who he is—questions he hopes to resolve during his stay on the Cape. Sarah's husband, Eli, who's been inexplicably distant during the pandemic, confronts the consequences of a long ago lapse from his typical good-guy behavior.

Fresh and humorous

The bright blue book cover for THE SUMMER PLACE is a cheerful illustration, looking every part the typical beach read, but it is not. This brilliant, complex family saga takes on several characters’ points of view, adds in cliffhangers and interlacing secrets, all with a solid structure so that the reader never gets lost. Secrets are such a wonderful literary device; misunderstandings and flashbacks kept me hopping. The narrative is fresh and humorous even as it takes a realistic look at grief and family bonds. Cute Calamity of Characters

Honestly, not my fav by Jennifer Weiner. I am a fan of her books. But I felt like this book took longer to identify the characters, before the plot started taking hold. And, I get the character diversity, but what are the odds that these characters would all intertwine in this manner. I love the general idea, but maybe it was too much when you added the Gabe factor towards the end. I did enjoy the relationship of the past which caused Eli to contemplate his next move. That was creative and more realistic in my opinion. I loved the character of Ronnie, and her story, Just a little too much for me, and a little to far fetched to grasp the overall concept of the book. No worries, I will keep reading her!

Summer is Place on Earth

The Summer Place (the third in Weiner's "Summer" trilogy) is as choppy as the waves off Cape Cod. Weiner is my absolute favorite author in the genre as her special brand of realistic humor is second to none. A pandemic story filled with family drama mostly set in a house on the Cape...and SPOILER ALERT...the house is a character in this salty tale. Jennifer Weiner is the beating heart of women's fiction (and men should read her too, as they will have a blast) with characters who are folks we all know. Not cardboard cutouts of what glossy magazines want us to believe women are, but true to life characters that are wonderful, hilarious and bosses of their lives. This novel is the perfect beach read, but packs a big wallop, as her writing is as sharp and sassy as any family or friends sitcom; and with just enough salty air to top off your gossipy quota for the summer. I adored this novel, as I have adored all her previous novels. The Boston Globe says it best - "Expect all of the hijinks, heartbreak, and happiness of a messy reunion." Big Summer and That Summer make up the "summer" books although they are all separate stories.
