I haven't read a Nicholas Sparks book in a while - probably 3 years. My romance reads were almost exclusively Sparks while growing up. He used to be my all-time favorite, and while he's still defintely top 5, his stories are more than just romance. If I want a lighthearted romance novel, his are not the ones I pick up. That being said, I loved every second of this book. It made me remember why I fell in love with his writing all those years ago. His books make you think, feel, laugh, cry and everything in between. Sparks takes you on a journey where at the end, you look at your life slightly differently. Maggie was an incredible MC. Though she has a grim diagnosis, she really tries to not let that rule her life when she can control it. She knows her limitations, but isn't afraid to push the boundaries when her body allows her to. The time jumps allow you to see how Maggie got to be so strong. The trials she faced as a teenager made her into the adult who is narrating. The young love between her and Bryce is everything you remember your first love being. It's new, it's idealistic, it's unthinking, it's brave, it's heartbreaking and it's terrifying. You see all of those play out in Maggie and Bryce's story. Aunt Linda was the heart of the book for me. She was Maggie's sounding board (with or without speaking) and had such grace to let Maggie make her own decisions or mistakes but was there for her every step of the way. With Maggie's complicated relationships with her family, Linda is exactly what she needed. I loved watching that relationship evolve. Though the ending wasn't what most readers would've wanted, it's what the story needed. I don't think it could've ended in any other way honestly.
